Papermaking, printing and packaging: Huge potential in new packaging, a blue ocean market waiting to be explored
Time:2014-11-04
Environmentally friendly and functional consumption concepts are giving rise to new types of packaging. The overall development of the industry lags behind the "new packaging" in foreign markets. New packaging is based on traditional packaging, incorporating advanced science and technology, leading to significant innovations in the functionality, design, and environmental protection of traditional packaging. Currently, the types of new packaging attracting the most attention in the industry mainly focus on material innovation and functional innovation. New packaging companies and related products have been appearing successively in developed countries such as Europe, America, and Japan. Many domestic listed companies have begun producing composite packaging materials, such as the listed companies Yuehua Packaging and Wanshun Shares, but the overall development of the industry lags behind that of foreign countries. With the packaging industry's continuously increasing environmental requirements and expanding demands for packaging functions, new packaging will enjoy greater development space.
Material and functional innovations are making progress simultaneously, but the commercialization level of the new packaging industry is relatively low. Material innovation refers to the use of new materials, making packaging more environmentally friendly and better meeting consumer needs while maintaining performance comparable to that of existing products. This mainly includes nano-packaging, edible packaging, and green packaging. Functional innovation refers to the application of new technologies to enable packaging to achieve functions it did not previously possess, mainly including composite packaging, active packaging, and self-heating and self-cooling packaging. Currently, most nano-packaging and intelligent packaging products in China are still in the laboratory research and development stage; edible packaging, self-heating, and self-cooling packaging are only used on a small scale in the Japanese and European and American markets; the green packaging industry has a weak foundation and few enterprises; the composite packaging technology requirements are relatively low, and its development is relatively mature.
Tetra Pak: Monopoly position gradually weakened, domestic manufacturers seize market share. Tetra Pak, developed by the Swedish company Tetra Pak, is a typical and mature type of composite packaging, widely used in the packaging of milk and other soft drinks.
It has broad market space and good profitability. We estimate that the current market size of Tetra Pak in China exceeds 25 billion yuan. Since entering the Chinese market in the 1970s, Tetra Pak has long held a monopoly position in the domestic aseptic packaging market through patent protection, bundled sales, and control of the industrial chain. However, with the entry of domestic and foreign manufacturers and changes in market demand and policy environment, the monopolistic pattern of the aseptic packaging industry has been continuously weakened. We can expect that domestic enterprises will continue to grow and further seize market share in the aseptic packaging market in the future.
Cold chain packaging: Traditional foam boxes urgently need reform; composite cold chain packaging is booming. With the rise of the e-commerce logistics industry and the increasing demands for the delivery of agricultural products and processed foods, cold chain logistics has become a new industry focus.
E-commerce giants are scrambling for cold chain logistics, and many listed companies, such as Haibao Shares and Xueren Shares, have also raised funds to increase their investment in cold chain logistics. Currently, new types of packaging that have been put into use include composite insulated cartons, composite corrugated cartons, and EPP environmentally friendly insulated boxes, which can well meet the needs of future cold chain logistics packaging from both functional and environmental protection perspectives. In the downstream of cold chain logistics, agricultural products will remain the main category in the future. Among them, the fruit market has a large annual output base and rapid growth, and the maturity of cold chain technology continues to improve, which will make it a star category of cold chain logistics goods. In addition, pharmaceutical products will become a major category in the future development of the cold chain logistics market, with vaccines and blood products being the main growth points, while diagnostic reagents have great growth potential. Currently, the coverage capacity of China's pharmaceutical cold chain is only 10%, and nearly 20% of pharmaceutical quality problems are related to the cold chain. It can be expected that in order to ensure the quality of drug circulation, the coverage rate of pharmaceutical cold chains will continue to increase, which will become one of the main driving forces of the cold chain packaging market.
Risk Warning: New packaging is still in the experimental stage, the technology is not yet mature, the degree of commercialization is low, and there is great uncertainty about whether the production cost can be further reduced; the large-scale production of certain new packaging may face certain technical obstacles.
