Chinese food packaging machinery going global is an inevitable trend

Time:2014-11-04

Although China's packaging machinery industry has become one of the top ten industries in the machinery industry, it still lags behind developed countries due to its late start. To ensure healthy development of China's packaging industry and market, the domestic packaging machinery industry must quickly replace its traditional model of solely importing and imitating with a model focused on technological innovation, user proximity, and independent research and development.

  Gap with Developed Countries

Compared with developed countries, the gap in products and technology in China's packaging machinery industry is mainly reflected in the following aspects: From the product structure, China only has more than 1300 types of packaging machinery, such as pillow packaging machines, tea packaging machines, and granule packaging machines, with limited supporting equipment and a lack of high-precision and large-scale products, failing to meet market demand; the quality gap is reflected in low product performance, poor stability and reliability, unattractive appearance, rough surface treatment, and many poor-quality components with short lifespans and low reliability, affecting the overall product quality; from the perspective of enterprises, the domestic packaging machinery industry lacks leading enterprises, and there are few enterprises with large production scales and high-grade products; from product development, China is still basically in the testing and imitation stage, with weak independent development capabilities, a lack of research and development production pilot bases, and research and development funding accounting for only 1% of sales, while it is as high as 8%-10% abroad. In general, compared with internationally advanced products, China's packaging machinery is at a disadvantage in terms of product development, performance, quality, reliability, and service.

  Competitiveness of Domestic Packaging Machinery

Currently, China's exported packaging machinery mainly includes beverage and liquid food filling machinery, packaging machinery, paper and paperboard processing machinery, paper-aluminum-plastic composite flexible packaging machinery, various window sealing and labeling packaging machinery, machinery for manufacturing packaging boxes, cases, tubes, and barrels, and resistance welding machines. Food and packaging machinery exports have spread to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America, Africa, and Europe. Among them, the Asian region accounts for 35-40% of total exports, the European market accounts for about 30% of total exports, the Middle East and Southeast Asia are traditional export markets, and Africa and South America are newly developed emerging markets in recent years. Overall, China's food and packaging machinery is very suitable for the technical level and economic conditions of developing countries and regions, and the future export prospects to these countries and regions are broad.

China's food and packaging machinery exports have evolved from small to large, and from low-end to high-end, showing a diversified product landscape. From small items like coding machines and bundling machines to large complete sets of equipment, exported food and packaging machinery basically covers existing product categories, with different levels of food and packaging machinery having different sales markets.

China's food and packaging machinery is characterized by moderate technology and good value for money, with a clear price advantage. The price of Chinese food and packaging machinery exported to Europe is only 1/3 or 1/4 of the international market price. A domestically produced "automatic filling and packaging machine" can create a vacuum without a vacuum chamber. Similar German equipment not only requires a vacuum chamber but also operates at only 70% of the speed of the Chinese product, yet costs five times as much. In the future, while continuing to maintain its price advantage, China's food and packaging machinery exports should increase the export share of large-scale complete sets of equipment and high-tech products, striving to seize the technological high ground.

Future Development of Domestic Packaging Machinery

Currently, China's packaging machinery industry has entered a period of rapid development. Low-level products will gradually be eliminated from the market in the future. In recent years, China's machinery industry has greatly improved its competitiveness and industry development level through changes in product structure, industrial agglomeration, and specialized restructuring, with the industry scale and total industrial output value continuously expanding.

Today, China's packaging machinery industry is no longer the same. China has become the world's largest producer and exporter of goods, and at the same time, the world's attention is focused on China's packaging market, which is developing the fastest, is the largest, and has the most potential. The greater the opportunity, the fiercer the competition. Although the product level of China's packaging machinery industry has reached a new level, showing a trend towards scale, complete sets of equipment, and automation, equipment with complex transmission and high technical content has also begun to emerge. It can be said that China's machinery production has met the basic needs of the domestic market and has begun to export to Southeast Asia and third-world countries.

However, to meet market demands, China's packaging machinery industry has reached a crossroads, and transformation and adjustment have become an issue that the packaging machinery industry must consider. Developing towards high speed, multi-functionality, and intelligence, pursuing high-end technology, catching up with developed countries, and expanding to the global market has become an inevitable trend.
